YouTube: Our Solar Food Dryer Explained

We often get questions about our solar food dryer so we decided to take you on a tour of how it works in this week’s video. You can buy solar food dryers online but they’re nowhere near as effective as the kind you can build yourself.

The difference is convection, which is inherent in the design of the one we built. If you’re looking for a new project to keep your hands busy this season, give this one a try.

What can you dry in it? Check out these posts on what we’ve dried:

Solar Flax Chips

Crispy Kale Chips

Dried Leeks – we’ve also dried peppers, shallots, home-grown goji berries

Garden Fresh Fruit Leather

Using recycled and on-hand materials we were able to build this for under $120. Prices may vary on your project, but it was worth the work to have this unit that dries food faster than any plug-in dehydrator in town.
