Wordless Wednesday: Summer Solstice

Summer solstice happened on Sunday, and now we begin the slow journey toward fall. For those of us in SoCal, that journey is long. There is so much summer to enjoy before leaves fall and the weather cools. Here’s some inspiration to help you make the most of summer.

Celebrating Summer Solstice – Off Campus

We spent summer solstice baking bread in a community oven in Westchester, CA. We use a custom stencil to mark our bread with the Gardenerd carrot.
Spotted at Ocean View Farms, a beautiful dahlia the size of a salad plate.

On Campus Excitement

A recent video we did for Instagram went viral about how to protect your corn from earworms. We also have a YouTube video about this. technique.
Our spaghetti squash is growing strong thanks to hand pollination. Check out this week’s video as well.
Miniature white cucumbers are leafing out this week. They are one of our best growers.
Two varieties of yard-long beans are climbing the trellis

Some Setbacks

When you plant “golden zucchini” and your seed packed is lying to you, this is what you get.
Our rats prefer paste tomatoes, it appears. Time to set traps again. We caught 7 last week, but obviously there’s still more work to do.

Hopeful Times

We’re growing Aleppo pepper for the first time this year. Its interesting shape is starting to reveal itself.
The pomegranates are turning red

Here’s to a summer filled with delicious food from the garden, and minimal issues with critters. Get out there and get your hands in the soil, you’ll feel better about the world in no time.
