Our Stowell's evergreen sweet corn is stealing focus. No tassels yet, but they'll pop up soon.

Wordless Wednesday: Unofficial Start of Summer

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. Mittens and the chickens are waking me up well before 6 a.m. now, a sure sign that official summer is not far behind. The garden is jumping and we’re excited to see fruit setting on most crops. Diligence is key, the first signs of rats are apparent (nibbled baby squash yesterday). Keep an eye out and take action quickly. If you don’t know how, join our Creating a Healthy Garden online pest control course this week!.

In the Test Garden

apple tree
Fujis are happening! We’re hoping for a bumper crop this year.
Bronze Torch tomato
Bronze Torch is the TomatoMania Tomato of the Year. So far it’s living up to the hype.
Mystery squash
This volunteer mystery squash is taking over our green onion patch. We’re thinking it might be a spaghetti squash (vining habit rather than bush). If you have a guess, post in the comments below!
Bush and pole beans
Our bush lima beans look more like climbers today. Did we mix up our seed jars? Only time will tell.
Blackberry season
Blackberry season is winding down here at Gardenerd HQ. We’ve frozen a bunch, eaten many right out of the garden, and made blackberry ice cream.
Orange Bell pepper
This orange bell pepper is starting to flower. It’s from a saved seed that was labeled “powder green pepper” but we left it long enough last year to discover that it was orange. The hubby likes those.
