Wordless Wednesday: After the Rain

Rain makes everything grow (it’s the nitrogen, really). While you enjoy your holiday week, here’s some inspiration to plant something new.

2.5 Inches of rain last week makes the garden happy. Irrigation is off and will be for a while.

Fruit Trees

The navel oranges are turning color but aren’t ready to pick yet. Next month!
Pomegranates are ripe and ready to pick

Unexpected Ground Covers

New Zealand spinach makes a nice ground cover. It volunteered a few years ago and we decided to keep it.
Stinging nettles make an edible carpet in the garden. Make soup with it, among other things.

Under a Different Kind of Cover

Radishes are getting close to ripeness under row cover.
Mars Landing kale and others are getting cozy under floating row cover
Waltham broccoli is protected with cages, but still open to the elements.

Garden Surprises

A surprise artichoke is budding in the garden in November. Who knew?!
Allium roseum bulbs from Eden Brothers, a gift for Thanksgiving. Use our affiliate link to shop for your own here.

Whether you are tending the garden after the rain or shutting down the garden for winter, we hope you enjoy what you see out the window this time of year. Maybe you’re looking through seed catalogs (my first 2 arrived yesterday). Share your favorite holiday weekend activity below.
