Yes, our roses bloom in December. Come January we'll prune them back, but we're not going to curtail this bloom just yet.

Wordless Wednesday: Winter is Coming

The phrase “winter is coming” invokes images of snow storms, battles (for GOT fans), and a garden in dormancy. But here in SoCal it is anything but. Winter means, rain, cooler temperatures that plants love, and an abundance of citrus and salad greens. Here’s some eye candy to inspire your winter gardening, or your hopes for spring.

New Growth

Our sugar snap and snow peas are starting to climb their trellises.
Kale is growing and soon we’ll harvest our first leaves.
Monarch caterpillars munch on milkweed. They need the food this time of year, as Monarchs overwinter in Los Angeles.
We’ve been adding spinach to soups and salads for a few weeks now. They love this weather.
Our radishes and carrots are nestled in for winter. We’ve been harvesting radishes for salads. Green onions are getting big, so we’re planting a new batch.
Meyer lemons are ripening. We’ll have these and navel oranges through spring.
Loquat tree is setting fruit. This delicious tropical fruit is one that bruises easily so you won’t find it in stores.

End of Season Stuff

Pomegranate tree leaves are turning yellow, ready to fall off in dormancy. It was a good season this year.
Pineapple sage is finishing up its flowers for the season. Time to prune when it’s done.
Mittens approves of our sale on the Ultimate Garden Bag. Get yours before they’re gone!

We hope you enjoyed your 2025 growing season, whether winter is coming or it’s already here. Set aside some time to read through seed catalogs and prepare for next spring. We’ve got online courses that will help you prepare for 2026 when you’re ready!
