Our hens started laying a month earlier than last year. Maybe it's the dry weather, but we're happy to have them sooner.

Wordless Wednesday: The Garden Marches On

As spring approaches slowly, the garden marches on. Winter has been dry here in SoCal. And the fires that devastated entire neighborhoods have affected more than the areas that burned. Everyone is feeling it in LA. It’s been wonderful to see thousands of volunteers show up to help. Here’s a little sunshine to brighten your week.

Navel oranges are ready to pick, then it’s time to prune the tree.
Anyone need Tatsoi? We’ve got an abundance. (we make a few cents if you use that link)
Roses in winter? Yes, here in SoCal we are lucky to see flowers this early.

In Progress – The Garden Marches On…

Black nebula carrots have beautiful red stems (use to link to support Gardenerd)
Blackberry canes that we pruned in December are beginning to bud. Watch our video on how to prune blackberries here
Sugar Snap Peas have begun to flower.
A new pineapple sage plants starts to send out new growth.
It’s time to hill up soil around potatoes to prevent surface tubers like this one from turning green.

But Not Without Issues

Fire blight on manzanita plants – Very Important: cut off the diseased branches while sterilizing shears between cuts.
Nasturtiums flower and spread across the yard at Gardenerd HQ. We don’t mind the invasivness of nasturtiums, but be aware that it spreads. Keep an eye on it.
Mittens sits in the shade overseeing her garden. Soon she will be catching rats, so please don’t use poisons in your garden.

Check your air quality before heading out to the garden this week. Hopefully it will improve soon. If you haven’t read our post about the safety of your crops after the fires, click here.
