Field Trip: Island Seed and Feed

While in Santa Barbara, I visited Island Seed and Feed, which is owned by a friend of a friend. I was in town giving a talk at the Santa Barbara Horticultural Society, and the owners of Island S&F offered to house me during my stay.

For years I have wanted to visit this mythical garden store. I was not disappointed when I finally stepped inside.

Bulk items range from fertilizers for your garden…
…to feed / seed options for your critters.

It’s a gardener’s paradise, with not just one brand of seeds available, but three (or 4? I lost count).

Seed racks from High Mowing, Botanical Interests, Seed Savers and more.

The owner, Matt Buckmaster, and I could spend hours talking (and we did, honestly). He likes to carry local artisan’s products, including a local compost manufactured by “one guy with a dream”.

Matt is a down-to-earth guy with a passion for all things homesteading.

You can get your baby chicks while you’re there, or shop their nursery for native plants or seedlings for your veggie garden too.

Seedlings are a big draw in the nursery
I also spotted my books on the shelves, right above the seed potatoes and asparagus crowns.

It’s worth stopping by if you are driving along the 101 FWY in Southern California. The sign may be obscured by overgrown shrubs (I can relate), but you’ll find just about anything you need for your gardening operation at Island Seed and Feed.

They even have a resident cat who lives on the property.
