Our volunteer tomatoes show the first signs of fruiting. They make a carpet in one spot of the yard, and that's okay.

Wordless Wednesday: April Garden Fools

When April rolls around we all turn into garden fools, chasing the dream of beautiful flowers and a bountiful harvest. This dream is not futile and we embrace foolishness in the garden anytime. Here’s some inspiration to get your fool on.

Out with the Old

This milkweed seed pod is sending out seeds for next season.
These mustard greens are done for the season, but we caught a cabbage moth fluttering by in this shot. Had to share that.
Speaking of cabbage moths, they lead to cabbage worms and loopers on brassicas, so keep an eye out for them.
It may be tall but this kohlrabi is finally bulbing up. Yay!

In with the New

Borage is blooming and the bees are happy about that.
Don’t let those nasturtium leaves fool you, that’s a Tithonia flower in the middle. Volunteers from last year have wandered.
Blackberries are setting fruit. Soon we’ll taste their sweetness. Find our blackberry care guides here
We love it when these creme colored poppies pop up. It’s a native variant we welcome.
Purple artichokes send up a second round of buds. We harvested the first fruits already.
The Fuji apple tree is flowering after we pruned it this winter.
The harvest this week: carrots, turnips, artichokes, and more. Find our favorite carrot varieties here.
Lastly, this is the last week to back our Kickstarter for Christy’s new novel and get this cool tote bag reward. Every April Garden Fool needs one.

Let’s celebrate being and April garden fool together. Plant, grow, and enjoy spring as much as you possibly can!
