Wordless Wednesday: Summer Heat

Summer heat has arrived in Los Angeles. We used to get three weeks of really hot weather along the coast. Now it’s July through October. Some crops in the garden benefit from the heat, while others suffer. We do our best to keep them well watered and hope for the best. Here’s some inspiration to keep you going through the heat.

The bees are loving this myrtus communis compacta (compact myrtle) as it flowers.
Arugula flowers are still popping up around the garden. Let them go to seed to ensure plenty of volunteer arugula this fall.
Miniature white cucumbers are starting to form on vines.
This koginut butternut squash is climbing the cucumber trellis.
Spaghetti squash vines are starting to sprawl.
Stowell’s evergreen sweet corn is nearly ready to pick. How do you know when it’s ready? We’ve got the answer here.
Clusters of apples need thinning right now. Need guidance? This blog post will help you through the process.
Our pomegranates are setting fruit.
Dragon fruits are starting to turn color.
Ripening tomatoes in a bag so we get them before the rats do. These Russian Queen tomatoes will be as delicious as if picked when ripe.

Don’t let the heat get you down. Keep your plants happy with plenty of water and a thick layer of mulch. Use shade cloth if you need it (who cares if it’s ugly, right?). We’ll beat this summer heat together.
