Wordless Wednesday: End of Summer

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer (Sept 21st is the official end). The garden is transitioning as crops finish up their cycle, and signs of fall appear. Here’s some inspiration to get you through changing times.

End of Summer Goodness

This zucchini and yellow squash will become lasagna this week.
Snacking peppers are turning a rainbow of colors.
We’re harvesting bush lima beans for dry storage.
Spaghetti squash starts to firm up as it turns from green to cream-colored.
Chives are flowering and the milkweed beetles are out in force. They are edible (the chive blossoms, not the milkweed beetle).

Just Getting Started

How delightful to see this lemon verbena send up new leaves as the old die back.
The loquat tree is starting to send up flower stalks. This fall fruit is so sweet, coming into season as the vegetable garden dies off.
Better late than never, watermelons are spreading out in their bed. With another 2 months of hot weather in LA, these have plenty of time to produce.
Navel oranges are filling the tree. These will be ready around Christmas.
Fuji apples start to blush as they grow.
Pomegranates start to change color and grow larger as fall approaches

Fall is the best growing season, so plant something for fall when temperatures cool down. SoCal gardeners plant fall crops in late October / early November. Northern climates start now! Enjoy the end of summer as we transition to fall and all the good things that come with it.
