1. November in the Garden – Trying to Be Thankful
The holidays are challenging for many folks. Sometimes gatherings with family are difficult, but food softens the edge. Around here we cook as a gesture of love, and the idea of bringing ingredients from the garden to the table makes it even more special. Whether you are cooking for yourself or others this holiday season, let’s make the most of it with food-as-celebration for that which we are thankful.
Here at Gardenerd HQ, we’re harvesting the first new leaves of lettuce, arugula, and mustard greens. We’re thinning carrots, radishes, chard, and beet sprouts, and watering daily to keep the top inch of soil moist on all seeded areas. The artichokes are coming back to life (as they do in warm-winter climates) but it will be a while before they produce. Cover crops of shelling peas are safe under floating row cover until they get tall enough to reach the supporting cages. This prevents rats and rabbits from cutting life short on these crops.
In this newsletter, you’ll find our latest video ???. And check out these last minute holiday recipe ideas in time for Thanksgiving. I hope you’ll join me in trying to be thankful this holiday season. There is a lot to be thankful for: the garden, the harvest, and as the saying goes, “six inches of topsoil and the fact that it rains”.
Happy gardening,
Christy
