1. May in the Garden – A Gardening Weekend

The long weekend ahead means a number of things: somber memorials, camping, barbecues, down time, and time for gardening. This month’s newsletter gives you plenty of motivation if the last part of that sentence is on your agenda. Plus we encourage eating from the garden with fresh salads, grilled veggies, and fruity desserts. You’re growing it, now you get to enjoy it.

This month Gardenerd HQ, we harvested potatoes (as shown below), and we’re planning a big clean up this weekend. Weeding, deadheading, pruning are all part of the plan. We’ll also plant winter squash, and harvest kale, parsnips, turnips, and carrots. This weekend is a great time to showcase winter cabbages from storage (recipe below) at your gatherings. It’s time to plant more lettuces, cucumbers, and beans. But it’s also time to take it easy. Invite friends over to plant with you, and relax with a cool glass of lemonade during breaks. These are the best days, before it gets too hot.

In this newsletter, you’ll find our latest YouTube video that’s all about cane berries. Plus save 25% on Christy’s books this month, and check out our Memorial Day recipes.

Happy gardening,

Christy

3. Gardenerd Tip of the Month – Memorial Day Recipes

Raw Asian Cabbage Salad will be a hit at your next picnic or BBQ.

Raw Asian Cabbage Salad

Cabbages store really well, and if you have any left from your winter garden harvest, this is a great use for it. Carrots, finely chopped cabbage, sesame seeds and toasted sesame oil make this dish delicious. We throw in tofu to make it a meal.

Watermelon Radish and Goat Cheese Salad

Showcase your winter or spring radishes in this simple salad. Goat cheese elevates it to more than just a side dish.

Meyer Lemon Cardamom Ice Cream

Bring something different to the party. This tart/sweet lemon ice cream has a twist of spice to bring it to new heights.
