1. December in the Garden – Gifts of the Garden

Happy winter solstice, gardenerds! The garden provides gifts any time of year, but in December it either brings you joy that its shut down for winter (rest is essential), or it’s going gangbusters (in warm-winter climates). The latter is true here at Gardenerd HQ. Rain in the forecast puts the garden on autopilot, and we get a bit of rest too. It’s time to watch movies, wrap gifts, and dream big for next year.

This month in the Test Garden, we’re harvesting kale, lettuces, green onion tops, bok choy and mustard greens. We’re watching broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi grow bigger each day. Peas, sweet peas, root veggies and lettuces are popping up while we wait for potatoes to emerge. Now is a good time to clean your garden tools (see below for details) and put down mulch to help prevent weeds that emerge when it rains.

In this newsletter, you’ll find our latest video about how to fix a clogged garden hose nozzle. And if you need a last minute gift, might I suggest gift certificates for that gardenerd in your life. Zoom and in-person consultations are just a click away or apply it to an upcoming class. Visit our store for autographed copies of books for the gardenerds in your life.
