December in the Garden
What a year it’s been, gardenerds. We thought everything would return to normal, but normal has turned out to be very different these days. As gardeners we’re used to dealing with whatever nature sends our way, but 2020-2021 required out-of-the-box thinking. I hope your garden provided comfort and solace amid the stress. I’m certainly feeling warm and fuzzy “holiday thanks” for mine.
In the Test Garden this month, I’m honestly feeling a little behind schedule. I still have cherry tomato plants putting out the occasional fruit, simply because I haven’t gotten around to pulling those plants. There’s still a giant pile of biomass to shred and turn into compost. It mocks me from just outside my office window. But still, the kale is going gangbusters, and we’re harvesting radishes, spinach, lettuces, mustard greens, cilantro, green onions, and parsley. I take comfort in knowing that the garden is on autopilot right now, providing for me even when I can’t reciprocate. I’ve had other projects stealing focus (see the Product of the Month for details).
