1. August in the Garden – Dog Days

The Dog Days of summer are technically between July 3 and August 11, but we feel them much later in the month than that. August is when our plants are getting tired, and we hope for cooler weather and a change of pace. Kids are heading back to school and daylight hours shorten a little more each day. It’s a time of transition.

Here at Gardenerd HQ, we’re working more indoors than out lately, but there’s plenty of weeding to do. The winter squashes are starting to change color, and we’re picking basil, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other herbs. We also planted pole beans for a late season growth spurt. If your tomatoes look sad, prune them back to give them new life. As crops finish up, tuck in a few quick crops to ride out the rest of summer: more basil, cilantro (in shade), a short season zucchini plant, if you have room.

In this newsletter, we share trellis tricks that will help you get more out of your vertical spaces. And we’re having a sale on autographed copies of Gardening for Geeks. (Hint: we need to make room for a new book coming early next year.) Enjoy 25% off with code NERDLOVE25 now through August 31, 2024. That’s cheaper than the Big A right now! Stock up on copies for holiday gifts while supplies last.

Happy gardening,
