1. October in the Garden – Fall Takes Over

The fall growing season occupies a considerable amount of brain space for me. You’ve heard me say it every year – fall is the best growing season. Fewer pests, cooler temperatures, actual rain. What’s not to love about it!? If summer tired you out, give fall gardening a try. You’ll find it easier to manage and, dare I say, better results.

Here at Gardenerd HQ, we’re adding hardware cloth (1/2″ welded wire mesh) to the bottom of a bed to keep the gophers out. While the Gopher Hawk has been helpful in catching the smaller of the burrowing animals, we’re still dealing with the larger critters who keep making more babies. They can chew through chicken wire, but not hardware cloth. We potted up our 2″ brassica cells into 4″ pots for more time under grow lights. Soon they will go in the ground. And we’re still prepping beds for fall planting, one at a time. Things take a little longer these days, but it still feels good to toil in the garden.

In this newsletter, we share our latest video that explains seed-saving laws and addresses conspiracy theories. And check out our fall planting guide to help you get motivated this season. Also, let’s talk fruit trees! If you plan to plant fruit trees or berries this fall, come to my class at Fig Earth Supply this Saturday. Reserve your spot today.

Happy gardening,

Christy

Baby brassicas (kale, cabbage, broccoli and kohlrabi) moved up to 4″ pots last weekend. They have a ways to go before they are ready to plant out.

2. Video: Seed Saving Laws Clarified

Christy dissects seed-saving laws so you know what’s legal or not.

Recently some folks said that it was illegal to save seeds. Christy clarifies seed saving laws in this video so you know what you should or shouldn’t save.

False Fall Harvest
Radishes, green onion tops, Swiss chard, lima beans and cilantro can fill your fall harvest basket.

Here in Los Angeles fall is our busiest month. We plant gardens from now until the week before Christmas (if not traveling). Folks with snow may shut down the garden for the season, but we’re just ramping up over here. Find our fall planting guide below. We hope it inspires you to grow something this fall.
