1. September in the Garden – The Season’s Turn
Fall is officially here, and while some gardeners aim to shut down the garden for winter, we’re just getting started with the best growing season yet. Fall is cool in more ways than temperature. All my favorite crops grow in fall: brassicas, alliums, peas, root veggies and more! No offense to tomatoes, but this stuff excites me so much more than the summer stuff.
In the Gardenerd Test Garden, we have a little longer before we plant cool-season crops. We’ll be starting brassica seeds indoors soon, and doing bed prep for outdoor seeding. We’re harvesting peppers, tomatoes, basil, green onions, lima beans, cucumbers, and mint. The watermelons are coming along (late but good), as is the winter squash. If you haven’t done your fruit tree summer pruning, now is a good time.
In this newsletter, we share our fall planting guides, and some of the best lettuce (and other greens) varieties to grow this fall for flavor-filled salads.
Happy gardening,
Christy
