1. August in the Garden – Heading Into Fall

Kids are back to school and hot weather is hitting the garden hard. What was lush and beautiful only a week or so ago is now waning under unrelenting high temperatures. Such is the way of the garden. This seasonal cycle forces us to change, whether we want to or not. But the promise of fall gardening draws near. Just a little longer!

In the Gardenerd Test Garden, we planted more winter squash after removing our sweet corn plants. We’re picking tomatoes, yard-long beans, basil, and cucumbers. The peppers are turning colors, and we’re making everything zucchini with the summer squash harvest. We’re also trapping rats, because…well, rats suck. Our watermelons are setting fruit (better late than never), and we’re turning the compost piles to get them closer to ready for fall and next spring be prep. And we spotted the giant insect below on its way toward a safe spot to lay eggs.

In this newsletter, you’ll find a giveaway for a very cool gardening book, a review of our best tomatoes of the year, and more. Stay cool this summer, gardenerds. Fall will be here soon.

Happy gardening,

Christy

We spotted a Carolina Sphinx moth crawling across the patio. Wow, they’re big, with a wingspan of up to 4.75 inches! These guys become tomato hornworms (or rather, the other way around).
