1. July in the Garden – Taking a Break

July is often funky for gardeners. The garden beckons, but so does vacation. Right when tomatoes are turning colors, we head off on a trip, and I have spent a lot of time thinking about how to manage this issue. In the past we’ve put ripe tomatoes in the fridge to enjoy them when we return (honestly, homegrown tomatoes still taste fine once they’ve been in the fridge). Or we’ve offered up the harvest to the house sitters. Other times we cross our fingers and hope for the best. Usually nature works things out for us.

Here at Gardenerd HQ, the sweet corn is mostly done, and our winter squashes are growing and turning colors. We’re actually contemplating planting another round of tomatoes since our summers don’t really end until late October. The apples are being targeted by critters, but our protective coverings (as seen in this post) help slow them down a little. We’re taking a break for a week or so, to round out the month.

In this newsletter, you’ll find a video tutorial on how to save tomato seeds, and a few summer tips from our podcast archives. Don’t forget my new novel, Bolting to Seed is officially available anywhere books are sold. Check out the options below. We’re hearing from readers that they love it!

Happy gardening,
