February in the Garden
Spring is close at hand, and for some it has already arrived. Hyacinth blossoms fragrance our yard as I write this, and winter lettuces are nearing their end. It’s time to plant seeds for spring, whether indoors or out.
In our Test Garden, we’re turning compost piles to ready them for spring use. We’re harvesting lettuces, mustard greens, kale, beets, radishes, peas, and cilantro. We’re blasting aphids off chard, and pruning back herbs to trigger new growth. The garden is blooming with nasturtiums and calendula, which help keep bad bugs at bay. We scattered wildflower seeds before the last rain in hopes of summer flowers. Next, we’ll plant sunflower seeds galore!
It’s time to start seeds for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant if you want to plant out in early to mid-April. Be sure to check out our newest podcast about foraging, too.
Happy Gardening,
Christy
