1. September in the Garden – Get Ready for Fall

Fall will officially be here later this month, but many gardeners are already planning or planting for fall. Warm-winter climate gardeners need to wait a little longer, but bed prep, seed-starting and other tasks are on the agenda this month.

Here at Gardenerd HQ, we’re pulling old winter squash vines that are dry and crisp to make room for fall plants. We leave winter squashes in the sun for a week or so to toughen up the skins for storage. We’re adding compost to beds to make them ready for fall planting. In the harvest basket: winter squashes like spaghetti, butternut, delicata, and pumpkins will all make their way indoors. And we’re picking cherry tomatoes, herbs, and the hopefully the first apples of the season.

In this newsletter, we share our latest video that answers the question: should I leave roots in the soil when I pull a plant? And big news! We’re opening registration for our Plan Your Abundant Edible Garden online course next week. We’re here to help you grow your best garden this fall. Let’s get growing together!

Happy gardening,

Christy

Should I Leave Roots in the Soil? We answer that question.

Small space gardeners have to get creative, but it doesn’t mean your garden has to be boring or limited to just one or two crops. Our latest YouTube video helps you grow more on those trellises in small spaces.

3. Gardenerd Tip of the Month – Bed Prep for Fall

get ready for fall with bed prep
Before planting crops, prep your beds for a better growing season

Bed prep is the most important step to take before planting new crops in fall. Heavy-feeders like tomatoes and corn have used up nutrients in the soil. Give you fall garden the best start possible. Watch our bed prep video to learn how to get started.
