1. July in the Garden – Loving Summer

Summer harvests make the garden great this time of year. It’s the time to delight in the fruits of our labor. We’ve worked hard to grow these crops, and now the garden rewards us. Some things worked, some didn’t, so we make notes for next year (break out those garden journals now!).

In the Gardenerd Test Garden, we’ve been harvesting sweet corn, tomatoes, Swiss chard and a random kale that is somehow still alive and insect-free. The cucumbers, long beans, peppers, and basil are growing in nicely. And the first squashes are flowering and setting fruit. Our shade-grown cilantro is holding up nicely, and the citrus trees and pomegranates are fruiting as well. It’s not all rosy, though…we’re trapping gophers – hopefully – before they can take down the squash plants. Fingers crossed we win that race.

Speaking of winning: we won a GardenComm Silver Laurel Award! In this newsletter, you’ll find not only our latest video on growing poppy seeds for baking. You’ll also find our video (How to Deal with Onion Rust) that won a prize. All this and more to keep you loving summer.

Happy gardening,

Christy
