1. February in the Garden – Learning Opportunitites

Spring is in the air, or will be soon in most places. Most gardenerds are counting the days until last frost. Those of us who grow through the winter are enjoying the harvest right now. Then we’ll take a deep breath and start all over again with warm and hot season crops.

This month in the Test Garden, we started seeds for tomatoes, peppers, and tender herbs under grow lights. We’re harvesting brassicas, salad greens, green onions, herbs, and citrus from the garden and mini orchard. Flowers are popping up, including calendula, California poppies, love-in-a-mist, bells of Ireland, borage and nasturitums. We sprinkled seeds for dill and ornamental poppies through out the yard before recent rains and now they’ve sprouted. Yay! Take advantage of this down time to prepare for your next growing season.
