1. January in the Garden – Crazy New Year
We started January with an atmospheric river on the west coast, and we’re ending it with an arctic freeze in over half the country. There have been plenty of other crazy things in the news, and honestly, it’s really hard to talk about gardening as if nothing is happening out there. We at Gardenerd stand with the citizens of Minnesota. If you are feeling helpless, gardening is a good distraction, but if you want to take action, here’s a starting point.
We’ve been tackling bigger garden projects this winter: pruning wisteria (which means climbing atop an open timber pergola), laying at least 3″ of mulch over bare soil, and pruning fruit trees (citrus, pomegranates, and figs). All of these things make spring easier. If you live in a warm-winter climate, now is the time to tackle these tasks before we get swept up in planting new crops. It’s also a great time to plan your garden on paper. We’ve got you covered there (see below). We’re harvesting broccoli, kale, salad greens, tender herbs, and believe it or not, cayenne peppers from a 2-yr old plant.
In this newsletter, you’ll find a new product review, spring planning guidance, and details about my new novel. Let’s stick together and grow in 2026.
Happy gardening,
Christy
